FGGC Oyo celebrates 50 years with N44 million legacy projects

As part of its golden jubilee celebration, the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Oyo is set to host different big-shot events, including N44 million worth of legacy projects to improve the school’s facilities.
Founded in 1974 as part of the Federal Government’s Unity Schools project, the school has nurtured thousands of girls into leaders across various sectors.
In her statement, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, the Global President of the FGGC Oyo Old Girls’ Association, reflected on the history and mission of the school, established alongside other Federal Government Colleges to foster unity among young Nigerians from different backgrounds.
She noted that FGGC Oyo was among the early Unity Schools for girls, providing a space to prioritize girls’ education while addressing challenges related to co-education.
“Fifty years ago, FGGC Oyo opened its doors to its first set of students, and since then, it has nurtured over 6,000 young girls,” said Atsenuwa.
“The institution has continued to uphold the highest standards of education, producing leaders in various fields.”
Atsenuwa spoke further on the school’s recent achievements, including its success in the 2024 National Robotics Challenge, where FGGC Oyo students emerged as national champions and earned the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the United States.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Old Girls’ Association has initiated several legacy projects aimed at improving the school’s infrastructure and ensuring educational excellence.
These projects, valued at N44 million, include:
1) Solar electricity to power 11 classroom blocks, administrative offices, and the school library.
2) Solar-powered floodlights in the kitchen area.
3) A fully renovated, modern school library.
4) Solar-powered boreholes to serve five student hostels and the kitchen.
The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Tanko Sununu, will commission these projects during a special assembly on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
The three-day celebration will feature various activities, including a motorcade rally through Oyo Town, a visit to the Alaafin of Oyo’s palace, a Juma’at service, a social event with current students, and a gala night.
Important dignitaries including Mr. Olasupo Sasore, SAN, former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, will attend the convocation ceremony on October 19.
The celebrations will conclude with thanksgiving services in Oyo and Ibadan on Sunday, October 20.
Atsenuwa also concluded by calling on Nigerians to join in the celebration as alumni partnerships will help in rebuilding Unity Schools and restoring their glory.
“We are committed to sustaining a legacy of excellence, and together, we can continue to make history at FGGC Oyo,” she said.
