“My Electricity Bill Increased From N2.7M To N29 Million In 1 Month” – Lagos Deputy Gov Cries Out

The Deputy governor of Lagos state, Femi Hamzat has lamented the outrageous electricity bill allocated to his residence in the month of April.
While speaking at an event on Monday, Hamzat revealed that his electricity bill increased from N2.7 Million in March to N29 Million in April.
The deputy governor noted that he had to send the bill to the commissioner for energy as he found it very outrageous to be billed such a huge amount without justification for the increment.
“People that are trying to survive, and the common denominator for them is power. They don’t have power. There are billing challenges. In fact I’m a very good example. “Last month, in my house, or the state house that I live in, the bill was N2.7m last month. This month, Eko DisCo sent us a bill of 29m. I sent it to the Commissioner for Energy. It’s crazy. I actually procured a meter. I bought a meter to say, ’Look, don’t give estimated billing.
He also revealed that he has gotten meter but converting it has become a problem, while narrating the situation in Coker Aguda, Surulere where a resident’s annual rent of N2 million is what he is charged monthly for electricity.
I bought the meter, but to convert it is wahala. “There’s a place called Coker Aguda in Surulere, and people came to me, and I was asking them to calm down. A man’s rent in a year is about N2m; they gave him a bill of N2.8m for electricity. How can the bill be more than the man’s rent for a year? Those are the challenges that we have. “Our people are suffering because of estimated billing.”

The highlight of the event was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lagos State Government and the REA. The agreement lays the foundation for expanding solar power generation and distribution infrastructure in underserved and off-grid communities throughout Lagos State.
According to the parties, the initiative will be executed through joint technical assessments, capacity-building, investment facilitation, and support for community-based energy cooperatives.
The Lagos Economic Development Update (2025) report revealed that over 80 per cent of Lagos population and businesses spend N5.3tn every year to power their generators to generate electricity for households and businesses due to the state’s severe energy deficit.
As of 2020, only 31 per cent of Lagos households had access to the national grid, leaving 69 percent to rely on generators and other alternative energy sources.
