Why INEC’s Delay To Declare PDP Winner Of Imo North Election Is Unsafe For Democracy
After the December 5 senatorial election in Imo North, several dramas have played out especially in the APC and the PDP. The election outcome is yet to be known even though the Independent national electoral commission announced APC as the winner of the election but none of its candidate were eligible to be returned.
The two candidates of the APC in the election are senator Ifeanyi Ararume and Frank Ibezim but unfortunately, different court rulings sacked both of them just few hours to the election.
On the day of the election, it was difficult for INEC to pronounce a candidate as the winner, as the commission stated that it will wait for the court to give directive on who the winner will be.
Just last week, the court squashed Senator Ararume’s plea to ask INEC to declare him as the right winner, and the supreme court declared Frank Ibezim as the candidate of the APC.
Meanwhile, Frank Ibezim had been banned from contesting in any election by the federal high court in Abuja due to forgery in the certificates he submitted to the INEC for the election. He proceed to the appeal court to dissolve that case a day after Supreme court cleared him, and unfortunately, He lost the case, the federal court’s judgment was upheld.
With that situation, legally, it means the APC had no candidate in the election, and going by the constitution, the next party with the next highest vote should be declared as the winner of the election.
However, the INEC has remained silent on this case, and the people of Imo North have been left in a confused state as they don’t know who is representing the zone, its been like that for a year now since the former senator died.
As INEC keeps on delaying, justice is getting delayed and this is not healthy to our democracy, INEC should do the needful to save nigeria’s democracy.
