The race for who becomes the next president has started with full force especially in the All Progressive Congress and People Democratic party. We have seen several people showing interest in the seat, some have even officially declared their intentions to run for the post of a president in 2023.

So far, we have had politicians who are being proposed by some group of individuals to become the next president of Nigeria. From the ruling party we have Bola Ahmed Tinubu, VP Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Yahaya Bello while from the opposition party, we have Abubakar Atiku, Olubukola Saraki, at least for now.

While APC has not concluded on zoning of the ticket because the party is yet to hold a national convention, the PDP has said that the ticket is opened to everyone regardless of the geo-political zone of an individual which is very commendable.

With this, everyone has the opportunity by testing their popularity during the primaries in order to get the presidential ticket. Saraki declared his intention last week while Atiku is being proposed by some groups but the question is do both of them have the capacity to go to the polls and pull a great stunt? Looking at their past records, Atiku was candidate of the party in 2019 but he failed and lost to President Buhari while Saraki on the other hand didn’t get a good outing at the party presidential primaries in 2019. The presidential election is a major outing for PDP and any mistake will make the party lose out again, pushing Saraki or Atiku may not give the party the deserved attention at the election.

Therefore, to avoid any form of division or crisis, the party needs a candidate with a different touch to actualize the dream of taking power back from the ruling party. In PDP today, one of the politicians with a different approach is Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state. Wike has always been in the news for his fearlessness, projects in the state, he is loved by many Nigerians and of course, he can make a huge outing for PDP in the election.

One of the issues Nyesom Wike will face if he decides to run is at the primary election. There are some people who won’t vote for him to become the candidate of the party and to avoid this, a consensus should be adopted by the party leaders if truly they are after winning the election.
