REVEALED! How Police Service Commission Chairman, Smith Was Forced To Resign 

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Musiliu Smith, on Wednesday, resigned from his position.

There are claims that the former Inspector-General of Police was forced to resign as Chairman of PSC over controversies in the commission.

According to sources that spoke with Daily Trust, Smith was forced by the PSC Board on Wednesday to hand over to retired Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, who represents the judiciary at the commission.

Ogunbiyi is expected to take over the activities of the commission until President Muhammadu Buhari appoints a new PSC chairman.

The sources also noted that the board members deliberated on amending the PSC Act which states that a retired Inspector-General of Police is appointed to chair the commission.

The source said if a former IGP is appointed as the Chairman of the commission, the commission will not be independent and would experience impartiality.

The source said, “Immediately after the meeting started, one of the commissioners said that the defining characteristic and mission of the commission is that it is a civilian oversight body, external to the Police.

“This requires the PSC to be independent and impartial. It cannot be either of these if it is headed by a retired former Inspector-General of Police.”

According to the source, the move not to be impartial and independent is been affected by appointing an ex-IGP as Chairman, hence the call for Smith to step aside.

The source said another commissioner moved the motion that Smith should step aside which he accepted.

Smith was appointed as the Chairman of the commission in May 2018 by President Buhari.

He succeeded Mike Okiro, also a former Inspector-General of Police.
